Brief History
The original Hartwell Elementary was built in 1908. It served as Hartwell Grammer and Hartwell High School until 1921. The school building was destroyed by fire on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1933. The school was rebuilt in 1934. The school and gym are both listed on the National Register.

Hartwell Elementary currently houses approximately 516 students from grades Pre-K through 5th grade. Our student population is made up of 48.2% White, 34.4% Black, 6.1% Hispanic, 8.4% Multi-Racial, and 2.9% Asian. Approximately 67.4% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. We have 27 homeroom classes, 12 support service teachers, and 14 paraprofessionals. There is a full-time school counselor and a school nurse on staff.
